Summary
Livestock Technicians are responsible for managing the livestock- related tasks on a farm, such as animal health and welfare from farm to fork, conception and birth, through to the point of sale. They will also support business productivity.
As an Apprentice Livestock Technician, you will be responsible for making decisions about the daily management of livestock such as:
- Changes in diet based on nutritional values in feed.
- Managing livestock before, during and after birthing.
- Providing accommodation that meets the animal’s requirements for optimal health and performance.
- Selecting and preparing livestock for sale or transfer.
The apprentice will be responsible for completing daily records and reporting to senior management, assisting with overall strategic decisions to help drive productivity, livestock welfare and farm health and safety. Depending on the business structure, apprentices may also supervise junior members of staff.
You will complete the Level 3 Livestock Unit Technician apprenticeship standard.
- This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
- You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
- You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
- The typical length of this apprenticeship course is 24 months.
- This course typically starts in September.

Entry Requirements
- GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English
In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the qualification.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Level 3 Livestock Technician Apprenticeship Standard, which includes the following:
- City & Guilds Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides
- Award in Emergency First Aid at Work, which is a minimum of a 1- day course (Ofqual regulated)
- City & Guilds Level 2 in Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines
Assessment
The apprentice will be ready for End Point Assessment (EPA) which includes:
- 30-minute multiple- choice knowledge test
- Practical tasks and observations over the course of 5 hours, including 3 tasks
- Professional discussion with an independent assessor
Progression
Upon completion of the course, apprentices may wish to consider progression to the Assistant Farm Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship or Agricultural Management BSc (Hons).
Career Progression
Upon successful completion of the course, apprentices may wish to consider further continuation, development or promotion at work or within this sector.
Fees
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £250.
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £250.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £5,000.
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
