What You Will Study

Are you passionate about animals and curious about how they think, behave, and thrive? This exciting 2-year Animal Management Programme blends in-depth theory with hands-on experience, giving you the knowledge and skills to launch a career in animal care, welfare, or conservation.

In your first year, you’ll study the Level 3 Technical Diploma in Animal Management, where you’ll explore the science behind animal care and behaviour. Through engaging classroom sessions and practical activities, you’ll learn:

  • How to work safely and professionally around animals
  • The principles of animal husbandry, health, and handling
  • Key topics in animal biology, behaviour, and welfare

You’ll also develop practical skills in our modern, industry-standard facilities, including:

  • Cleaning and maintaining animal accommodation
  • Feeding, watering, grooming, and exercising animals

This year lays the foundation for both academic understanding and real-world competence.

In your second year, you’ll progress to the Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma, choosing one of two specialist pathways:

Animal Pathway – Ideal for those interested in working with companion animals. You’ll study:

  • Animal nursing and pet store management
  • Kennel and cattery operations
  • Animal behaviour and training

Zoo Pathway – Perfect for aspiring zookeepers or aquarium professionals. You’ll explore:

  • The care of exotic species including birds, reptiles, and aquatic animals
  • Zoo operations, customer engagement, and volunteer management
  • Conservation and education in zoological settings

Both pathways combine academic study with practical experience, including work placements and weekend duties, to prepare you for a wide range of careers in the animal sector.

Students will need to purchase PPE for the Animal Management Centre – full details will be provided at enrolment. You’ll be working in all weather conditions, indoors and outdoors, helping to maintain the highest standards of animal welfare.
