What You Will Study
This day-release qualification leads to registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) and combines academic study with hands-on placement where you will receive clinical training in an RCVS-approved veterinary training practice.
Compulsory, unpaid placement in the training practice forms part of this qualification. You must complete 1,800 hours of training in clinical practice over the duration of the qualification, and 2,990 hours’ training overall, gaining hands-on experience under professional direction and supervision.
You will work within the clinical team in the nursing, treatment, welfare and rehabilitation of small animals, whilst developing the professional knowledge, technical skills and confidence expected of an RCVS-regulated RVN.
You will study
- Embedded anatomy and physiology of small animals
- Anaesthesia and theatre practice
- Medical and surgical nursing
- Diagnostic imaging and laboratory techniques
- Infection control and patient care
- Communication, ethics and professional responsibilities.
The course typically takes around 2.5 years to complete, although this may vary depending on the timing of your final OSCE.
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English language, maths and a science
- Confirmed or planned placement in an RCVS-approved training practice
- A genuine interest in animal health, welfare and clinical care
How You Will Be Assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Written and online assignments to test your underpinning knowledge
- A practical skills e-portfolio
- A final Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to demonstrate clinical competence.
Your progress will be supported and monitored by your Clinical Coach and college tutors throughout the qualification.
Where Your Course Can Take You
Successful completion gives you eligibility to join the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons register as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN).
